Scenario 1
Ashish is working in India for an IT company as a manager. One day his senior manager
informed him that he needs to relocate to the United States for a project. Ashish was a little
skeptical, but he was excited for the opportunity. He was told that he will be moving to New
York. Ashish was nervous to travel to the US for the first time. He started to look for
accommodations, cars, grocery stores, the social security office, etc. He asked his friends for
recommendations and researched details about the environment and lifestyle in the United
States. The company had already booked travel arrangements, such as a 7-day hotel, 1-month
rental car, flights and provided US dollars.
After landing at John F. Kennedy airport, Ashish had to go through immigration at airport. He
had to provide his passport, immigration related documents, and 1-94 card. Ashish was
surprised that he had to pay for baggage trolley and international transaction fees on his card.
Before travelling to US, he had to carry his international driving license so that he could get a
rental car. He picked the rental car and drove to his hotel. Ashish then went straight to the
restaurant from his hotel. The next day Ashish went into the office for his first day of work. He
met co-workers and asked about the social security office and recommendations on where to
search for apartments. He went to the social security office to fill out his forms. Then, Ashish
started to look for apartment communities near his office building. He identified few areas and
booked appointments with leasing agents. He got quotes from leasing agents and finalized a
1-bedroom apartment near to his office. After getting a social security number after 30 days and
his residence proof, he went to to the driving license office to give written test. He started to look
for a driving instructor so that he could learn the driving rules and regulations. After few days,
Ashish went to the driving license office again to take his driving test. After a month, Ashish
received his driving license, which is a major milestone. He started to look for an Indian grocery
stores and he found few grocery stores near his neighborhood.
Scenario 2
Gloria is a young woman working for a firm as a UX designer in Chicago. She finished her
education in Human Computer Interaction from a business school in China. After finishing her
education, she received an internship in a leading UX firm in Chicago, IL. She has been working
in the firm for around a year. She is hopeful that her manager will apply for her green card once
she finishes her first year in the firm. She is interested in travelling and dining in local
restaurants, but is concerned with finding her way around the city. She usually goes out with her
friends, as she is not sure of all the restaurants and sightseeing places in Chicago. She is also
interested in checking out Chinatown, but she is not sure about the location. She always takes
recommendations from her friends and colleagues.
